I can't promise you new books at the moment but I will try my best to present at least one update in a week. Hopefully I can get this blog running as soon as possible.

John Grisham - The Runaway Jury eBook

John Grisham - The Runaway Jury eBook
John Grisham’s legal thriller novel The Runaway Jury was first published in 1996. To this day, it is considered as one of Grisham’s best work. The book displays the flexibility and creativity of Grisham in building something around a genre that, for most, is relatively restrictive.

The story in the book follows Wendall Rohr and a team of successful lawyers who have filed suit on behalf of plaintiff Celeste Wood, a widow who has lost her husband because of lung cancer. The trial is scheduled to be conducted in a city in Mississippi. This is a state known of having favorable tort laws and sympathetic juries. The trial will call tobacco company Pynex, which is the defendant. Yet, even before the jury has been sworn in, Nicholas Easter, a stealth juror, starts to quietly connive behind the scenes. Along all the actions “behind” the courtroom, Grisham takes readers to view the conflicts from different perspectives, while slowly presents the intertwined web, before finally reveals the truth, which is quite surprising.

John Grisham - The Brethren eBook

John Grisham - The Brethren eBook
First published in 2000, The Brethren is considered one of the best of John Grisham books. In some aspects and levels, this legal thriller novel has become Grisham’s most daring book. The story in the novel evolves from two different subplots. In the first subplot, readers will follow the existence of three imprisoned ex-judges, who are frustrated since they no longer hold power and influence, and then decide to concoct an elaborate blackmail scheme that preys on rich, closeted gay men. The other story will bring readers trace the rise of Aaron Lake, a presidential candidate and a CIA puppet essentially created to fulfill the plans of CIA director Teddy Maynard for restoring the power of his under-pressure agency.

Editorial Review from Publishers Weekly
The novel does feature three antiheroes of a sort, the brethren of the title, judges serving time in a federal prison in Florida for white-collar offenses. They're a hard bunch to root for, though, as their main activity behind bars is running a blackmail scheme in which they bait, hook and squeeze wealthy, closeted gay men through a magazine ad supposedly placed by "Ricky," a young incarcerated gay looking for companionship. Then there's the two-bit alcoholic attorney who's abetting them by running their mail and depositing their dirty profits in an overseas bank. Scarcely more appealing is the big fish the trio snare, Congressman Anthony Lake, who meanwhile is busy selling his lifelong integrity when the director of the CIA offers to lever him into the White House in exchange for a doubling of federal defense spending upon Lake's inauguration. The expertly orchestrated and very complex plot follows these evildoers through their illicit enterprises, devoting considerable attention to the CIA's staging of Lake's presidential campaign and even more to that agency's potentially lethal pursuit of the brethren once it learns that the three are threatening to out-candidate Lake.
