Following her first big hit novel, Stephenie Meyer made another huge step as a bestselling author with the second volume of her Twilight saga, New Moon. Just like the first volume, this second book also evoked massive hype and achieved a huge success in its sale following its publication. The title Meyer picked refers to the darkest phase of the lunar cycle, which symbolize the darkest time in the life of the main protagonist, Isabella “Bella” Swan. Meyer also said that the book is about losing true love.
First published in September 2006, this novel strode quickly to the top of bestseller list and peaked at #1 in New York Times Best Seller list. It also received positive reviews generally. However, some critics thought that the middle section slowed the book's pace a little.
Edward and all the Cullens, his family, throw a party for Bella’s 18th birthday and in that party she accidentally had a paper cut. Her blood overwhelms Jasper, Edward’s adopted brother, and he tried to kill her. To save the life of the girl he loves, Edward tells Bella that he does not love her and the Cullens move away from Forks. This leaves Bella heartbroken and depressed.
To shake away the pain, Bella is now into thrill-seeking activities and she seeks comfort in her friendship with Jacob Black. Later she discovers that Jacob and the tribe members are werewolves. While at the same time, the vampire Laurent and also Victoria try to get Bella as they want to avenge James’ death. So, Jacob and the other werewolves protect Bella.
Meanwhile, Edward who has heard and believes that Bella has killed herself makes a suicidal action by provoking the Volturi. The Volture then tell Edward that as a human who knows the existence of vampire, Bella Swan must be either killed or bitten and transformed into a vampire too!
