Mort is the teenage son of a family with farming business but his father thinks that he dwells too much with his own thought and lack practicality. Hoping to get his son a job with some tradesman and mold his son’s character, Lezek takes him to a job fair. This event eventually leads to the arrival of a man in black coat who offers Mort a job to be his assistance. That man turns out to be Death and he has chosen Mort to be his apprentice in ushering souls into the next world.
In one of his jobs, Mort is supposed to usher a princess, but being infatuated with her, he saves her life instead. The change of fate of that princess has greatly altering the existence of Discworld. Besides that love life, there is something else developing during Mort’s apprenticeship with Death. He gradually loses his previous teenage character and he is becoming more and more like Death himself.
