Romance of the Three Kingdoms PDF Download eBookIn the fourteenth century, Luo Guanzhong wrote Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is a massively epic historical-fiction novel that is regarded as one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. Up to this day, the book is considered an influential classic work and is still very close to and very influential for the people not only in China but also Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
Though based on historical events, Luo Guanzhong’s story is a mixture of romanticization and dramatization imbued with legends and myths. The time is set around the fall of Han Dynasty (around 200 CE), when the Chinese empire was plagued by wars between three kingdoms: Wei, Wu, and Shu. It displays massive battles, complex intrigues, and genius schemes. It offers a staggering and unsparing view of the exercise of power, the administration of diplomacy, and strategically planned and fought wars. This massive novel also shows to readers how the Chinese view their history in a cyclical perspective, as summarized in the opening lines: “Domains under heaven, after a long period of division, tends to unite; after a long period of union, tends to divide. This has been so since antiquity.”
*Reviews of Romance of the Three Kingdoms*
"A martial epic with an astonishing fidelity to history...The subject matter of Three Kingdoms has long held an extraordinary grip on the Chinese imagination...The great achievement of the author...was to match historiography with fiction and gain a synergistic effect from the combination of elite and popular tradition." —Patrick Hanan, New York Times Book Review
