There are beautiful Fantine and her daughter Cosette, who both struggle through rough lives: because of economic situation, the mother has to leave her daughter and later is even forced to plunge into prostitution while the daughter should suffer abuse and is forced to work at very young age. There are still more characters including Marius, a law student who participates in the antimonarchy movement.
This novel has indeed become a very important and influential work of literature. Throughout the years the book has inspired many works and has been adapted into various forms like film, radio series, and musical theater. The most recent adaptation is a successful box office film with the same title that stars famous actors like Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe.
