The story in John Grisham's A Time to Kill follows the legal effort of Carl Lee Hailey. He is the father of ten-year-old African-American girl Tonya Hailey, who has been cruelly tortured and raped by James Louis "Pete" Willard and Billy Ray Cobb, two white racists. Driven by his anger to avenge his daughter, Carl Lee kills Pete and Billy Ray when they are being led into holding from their bond hearing.
Now, it is Carl Lee who has to deal with the court. He is charged with capital murder. He asks Jake Brigance to represent him. Feeling overwhelmed with the case, Jake asking the aid of his two loyal friends, attorney Lucien Wilbanks and lawyer Harry Rex Vonner. During the legal processes, more conflict arises as Freddy Ray, Billy's brother, is seeking revenge and even asks for help to the Mississippi branch of the Ku Klux Klan.
