Tom brings his wife, Isabel, to Janus Rock. During the years of accompanying her husband at the solitude island, Isabel has suffered two miscarriages and one stillbirth. Those ordeals have made Isabel grief deeply.
They find a dead man and a living baby girl that have just been washed up by the waves. Isabel insists on keeping the baby since it is a “gift from God,” although Tom is against the decision and wants to report the incident. They take the baby as their own daughter and name her Lucy. However, when they return to the civilization in the mainland two years later, they find that the decision they have made has ruined one of them.
