*Brief introduction to Markus Zusak's The Book Thief*
The Book Thief covers various themes. With Death as the narrator, the book presents the undeniable truth that mortality is present in the lives of each character. It also depicts how language, reading, and writing have the power to be the agents of freedom and expression that provide liberty and identity. There is also the theme of love. Amid the destruction and death during WW II, love enables the characters to change and be free.
Liesel Meminger has lost her family and lives with her new foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann outside of Munich. Hans teaches Leisel to read in secret and she recognizes the power of written words. She then begins her journey of self-discovery and scratches out an inadequate existence for herself by stealing books, which are something she can’t resist. Thus, her life as “the book thief” begins. When the bombing raids hit the cities, she shares the books she stole with the neighbors, and also the Jewish man hidden by her foster parents. Magnificently, the books become the food of the soul for those people that give them support and liberty during the destructive war.
