Divergent is a young-adult dystopian novel written by American writer Veronica Roth. First published in 2011, the book is the debut of Roth as a novelist and the first installment in the Divergent series. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the book captures common themes in young adult genre, like authority and maturity, while it also includes more serious themes like society and violence. The book has generated mostly positive responses and become a New York Times Bestseller. It also won Goodreads Readers Choice Awards. A film adaptation of the novel was released in 2014, starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James.
The story in Divergent is set in a post-apocalyptic version of Chicago. Here, the system divides society into 5 factions: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). When they reach 16, each citizen must choose which faction they will join. This obligation proves to be very difficult for Beatrice Prior (Tris). Confused and torn between staying with her family and becoming what she really is, she finally makes a shocking decision, even for herself.
To get into the faction of the choice, Beatrice has to pass the competitive and intense initiations. She changes her name into Tris. During that severely demanding initiation, Tris has to be wise in knowing who among her associates are friends. During this time, Tris keep a big secret close to her, because she has been warned that it may bring death. She also finds out there is a conflict boiling that may disintegrate the society. In this uncertainty, her secret might save the ones she loves or bring her to her own destruction.
